Riding from Kona to Hapuna Beach

Good morning! It is another beautiful day in Hawaii and life is REALLY good! I woke up this morning and cruised with some fellow travelers to the local farmers market again for the 3rd time in two days! I got pineapple. papaya, and apple-bannas! Oh yeah! Plus, I cruised over to Moco Loco and got a latte with Kona coffee!!! It has been a solid morning! I’m devouring breakfast right now and about to cruise on the bike. Sweet!

After loading up. I am on the road! 18miles, 1hr 18min! Great views! A lot of time trial riders on 5,000+ dollar bikes. Ha! I’m jamming out to pandora and loving it! I made it to Hapuna Beach state park. I have read that it is the nicest beach on the whole island, which I can totally vouch for!

Hapuna Beach

It is a really long sandy beach, approximately 1/2 mile long. I am staying at a very basic cabin about a 10 minute walk from the beach. The cabin is $50/night and has 2″x4″ framing with bug netting and a metal roof. You can hear the highway which is a bummer. When you check-in you get a set of keys for your cabin, bathrooms and shared cooking area. The shared cooking area includes a refrigerator and stove but has limited cookware.

Initially, I dropped stuff off at my cabin and went down to the beach! It was really busy but I was able to find a place to lay down. I was eager to go swimming and cool off! The water was warm! I decided to swim the length of the beach. It was really nice! It took me about an hour. Afterwords, I wanted to get some food. There is a small food concession stand that I went to but they stop serving food at 3pm…it was 3:15pm. Dang!

I was able to get a piña colada strawberry smoothie instead. It was yummy!!! I went back to the beach and laid on the beach some more. 🙂 As the sun started to go down I wanted to get a good view so I hoped on the bike again and cruised down this old road which was the old hwy.

I found some great views and some great beaches! It was unfortunate that I did not check those out earlier. I came back to the cabin and have been hanging out. I was hoping to get some dinner but the closest restaurant is 10miles away…. 20miles round-trip. So much for that Idea.

Fortunately, I had some bagels with peanut butter and honey ! Whew! Better then nothing! Tomorrow is going to be a big day! The plan is to bike/hike to Waimau valley. It is 30-35miles biking and a 9 mile hike… Not sure if that is too much but I will found out soon! I already researched a place that I want to go to for breakfast in the morning. It is in the town of Waimea, 10 miles away…uphill.

I’m gonna try and be on the road at 7am. It will be cool (temps) and less traffic. Plus, a BIG breakfast will be the ultimate motivator! After breakfast, I will ride 20 more miles and ditch my bike at the Waimea Valley lookout, then hike 9 miles. I have all day and I have heard that the hike is really awesome! With some great views!!! Excellent! Here are some photos from today’s adventures.
