Baked Goods and Coffee! mmmm…

As I have stated in other areas of my blog, I am a sucker for breakfast and I will go out of my way for quality coffee and baked goods. I will drive to the other side of town for quality baked goods and coffee! This morning was one of those days that I did exactly that!

If you live in Anchorage, AK or plan on visiting, you MUST make it PRIORITY to go to the best baked goods bakery in town! Fire Island Bakery

It is located on the corner of 14th and G. Location B

It is a hidden gem in the city of Anchorage, located in a rather odd location, tucked away in a residential neighborhood. Parking can be challenging and the local neighbors must not be too keen on the amount of traffic that the bakery attracts but people such as myself come from far and wide to indulge in the amazing baked treats that can only be found at Fire Island Bakery!

When you walk in the bakery, you are immediately engulfed in the delightful smell of freshly baked breads and incredibly edible amazingness! The display of baked goods can be overwhelming and tricky to decipher. There are a variety of croissants, scones, breads, delectable desserts, muffins, sandwiches and cookies! It is extremely challenging for me to walk out with only one item and I have a hard time deciding what I want. So! I usually get three and therefore I am able to enjoy a variety of baked goodness. My favorite item is the chocolate crossants or pain au chocolat in french. The other aspect of Fire Island is that it is always consistent! Often an overlooked aspect of restaurants and other eating establishments.

The downside of Fire Island is that it can often feel cramped inside and there is not alot of seating available but that is a minor detail because you go there for the food not the seating.

The next stop to complete the mornings breakfast activities is coffee! But! As most coffee connoisseurs know, the coffee market is saturated with horrible tasting coffee, poorly executed roasting of coffee beans and an inept ability to deliver a quality coffee drinking experience.

But! There are a few coffee drinking establishments that are able to distinguish themselves amongst their competitors. An up and coming cafe that delivers on its coffee delectability, expertise and taste is Steam Dot. They have two locations, one in the south side of Anchorage close to Firetap at 10950 O’Malley Centre, Suite E and their newest location on 600 E. Northern Lights Blvd. Their cafes offer a welcoming atmosphere, crisp ambiance and of course damn good coffee.

My understanding is that the owner broke off from another dominant cafe in town called Kaladi that has been in Anchorage since 1986. Kaladi has a dominant presence in Anchorage with many locations and they have been buying out competitors to gain marketshare in the coffee roasting, wholesale bean distribution and sit-down cafe markets. But! Steam Dot is a growing competitor that is delivering a higher standard in coffee quality and sit-down cafe experience in my personal opinion. Do not take my word for it! Try it for yourself and be blown away by what it has to offer!

Remember breakfast is the most important meal of the day and you now know of an additional amazing bakery and cafe to expand your breakfast horizons. Enjoy!
